If you’ve just done a double take at the title, yes, you’ve read it correctly.
How did I, a once high-flying, suit-donning, boss lady, find herself wearing gym attire and cleaning gear, transitioning from the corporate world to becoming a professional cleaner?
You might also wonder why I made such a drastic change.
The Corporate Ladder: Is It Worth the Climb?
For two long decades, I was submerged in the corporate industry, specifically within the medical administration sector. Inspired by my nan, a mental health nurse, I always harboured a deep-seated desire to aid others. But the idea of being a nurse wasn’t my cup of tea, hence my venture into medical administration. Starting at the young age of 21, I dived headfirst into various management roles, instigating both waves and changes wherever I went.
I frequently hopped from one job to another every couple of years. The beauty industry, with its air of self-entitlement, left a bitter taste. Working in gastroenterology meant dealing with many…. well, you get the picture. My final stop? The Aged Care Industry.
The Aged Care Industry: A Pandora’s Box of Emotions
This Industry sparked a whirlwind of emotions within me. It presented a paradoxical world where the noble cause of helping those in need was marred by the exorbitant costs associated with care. Exhausted, underpaid staff faced a constant struggle to deliver quality service while executives focused on profitability. The conflict was too great, and it felt as if I was trapped in a money-hungry, KPI-driven vortex. Fortuitously, redundancy came knocking in 2019, liberating me from this conundrum.
The Art of Cleaning: Discovering My True Passion
In the following four years, I experimented with various cleaning roles and products. From domestic to commercial cleaning, it was a steep learning curve. However, it was in
end-of-lease cleaning, squalor cleaning,
hoarding cleaning, decluttering, and organising services where I found my passion.
Most significantly, I discovered a niche – helping families with deceased estates or loved ones transitioning to Aged Care.
Cleaning Isn’t Just About Scrubbing Floors: A Deeper Insight
I quickly recognised a glaring lack of services for those requiring hoarding and squalor cleaning. Often, these services inadvertently traumatise residents, making them more resistant to future help. It’s not merely about emptying houses into bins as fast as possible. It’s far more complex than that.
People needing hoarding or squalor cleaning services often grapple with shame or desperation. In our society, we often compare ourselves to the picture-perfect images flooding our social media feeds, forgetting the reality for many couldn’t be further from the truth. Home environments can become overwhelming due to full-time work, having kids, injuries, traumatic life events or loss. It’s not just about mental health conditions or laziness, and our perspective needs to change.
The Joy of Cleanliness: A Rewarding Journey
There’s something incredibly fulfilling about helping families and residents declutter their living spaces. Providing a calm, peaceful environment is not just a service, it’s a reward in itself. Helping a resident declutter, organising their space, and leaving it fresh, clean, and visually appealing can lead to a calmer mind and life.
The Final Destination: Compassionate Cleaning
I’ve discovered my passion lies in delivering compassionate, caring, and consultative services, focusing on the clients’ peace of mind. My aim is to build a company that genuinely cares and listens to its clients. I’ve found my niche, and I love it.
And that’s how I traded my heels for runners, a journey that led to the unexpected but fulfilling world of professional cleaning. My feet, and my heart, couldn’t be happier!
